WDF Scientific Commission & Breed Standards

KAS works with the rules of relevant breeding programmes and cooperates with WDF. Technical recommendations are not state regulations; their applicability and binding status must be checked in the current document for the specific programme.

— Commission Structure —

Commission Structure

The membership, powers and procedures of technical bodies should be checked in current WDF documents. A fixed membership, election cycle or meeting schedule should not be stated without those records.

Breeds: recognition and procedures

KAS · 01

Breed recognition within a specific system

Conditions for any provisional or final recognition are set by the individual organisation. Inclusion in a KAS or WDF programme does not mean automatic recognition by other registries.

KAS · 02

Health requirements for the recognition of a new breed

Documentary evaluation of the health status of the candidate population: incidence of hereditary pathologies, screening for dysplasia, ophthalmopathies, cardiopathies and breed-specific genetic tests.

KAS · 03

Behaviour, temperament and utilisation

Assessment of temperament, psychic balance and aptitude for the original use of the breed according to the WDF Scientific Commission protocols.

KAS · 04

Guidelines on crosses of breeds and varieties

Crossbreeding is assessed against the specific programme’s aims, available ancestry data and health risks. Check the rules before planning a litter.

KAS · 05

Standardised nomenclature of coat colours

Unified code of colours and patterns, drafted with the Standards Commission, basis for judging and for KAS×WDF pedigree issuance.

Dog health: documents and protocols

WDF · H01

Memo on inbreeding

WDF guidelines on inbreeding risks and acceptable kinship coefficients in selection programs.

WDF · H02

Breeding and molecular tools

Uses and limits of molecular tests and genetic markers in modern breed selection.

WDF · H03

Hereditary and congenital diseases

An overview of hereditary and congenital conditions helps identify relevant examinations. Binding requirements follow the specific programme’s rules, not a general list.

WDF · H04

Breeding systems, health and welfare

KAS supervises breeding selection, assesses reproductive suitability and, where a programme provides for it, maintains genealogical entries and issues association certificates. Registration within the Slovak legal system administered by the Ministry of the Interior is not special canine accreditation, a monopoly or state authorisation to issue pedigrees. Legal registration dates to 2017; earlier references to 2016 must not be treated as legal incorporation without supporting records.

WDF · H05

Use of genomic tools

DNA tests examine specific variants or assess parentage using the relevant method. They are selectively required for champion pathways, high-profile breeding animals and certain international competition programmes when their regulations require them. They are not automatically compulsory for every mating or puppy. A parentage result is not evidence of freedom from all disease.

Dysplasia: examination and assessment

HD · 01

Hip examination

Veterinary examinations assess clinical condition. Depending on the dog and programme, they may address joints, heart, eyes, hearing, breathing or reproductive health. Selection and interpretation of examinations belong to the veterinarian; they are not automatically molecular genetics. KAS reviews submitted results and their relevance to internal breeding approval.

HD · 02

Radiographic procedure for HD evaluation

The veterinarian determines imaging, positioning and any sedation according to the method used and the dog’s condition. Check the specific programme’s requirements for acceptance of results.

HD · 03

HD assessment stated in the report

A dysplasia assessment is interpreted using the stated method. Check the relevant programme’s rules to establish its use in breeding decisions.

HD · 04

HD/ED findings and programme acceptance

A report should identify the dog, examination date, method and assessor. Acceptance of a particular form depends on the receiving organisation.

HD · 05

Elbow dysplasia (ED)

Guidelines on early diagnosis of elbow dysplasia and breeder management protocols.

KAS × WDF · Anti-Doping

Doping: zero tolerance

Check the current rules of the specific event for prohibited substances, testing and sanctions. Discuss the dog’s treatment with a veterinarian and any reporting obligations with the organiser.
